Winter League Game Week #3 - vs Durbanville B (Mens 3s) - 2014 Season

Ok we are back. Firstly, yes I know it has been a while since there has been anything on this blog. I blame doc, all my writing efforts have been focused on emails to Doc trying to get our GoPro sponsorship. That’s my story and im sticking with it.

Secondly, for those of you who don’t know as I did not really end off the seasons blog last year –
The Mighty 3s got promoted again which sees us now in M2,
Won Mutual Hockey Team of the year…..again
And to top it all off, we won Mutual Sport club team of the year at a fancy dinner.
Goood job lads.

Thirdly, I realise this is game week #3. No I will not be going back two weeks and posting gameweek 1 and 2. Just deal with it.

And after all those accolades, 60% of the team left because of other commitments. The strike pairing of Blake and Brown will be missed. Caveman and Tallis unable to commit to practices on a school night. Tooori ……actually I have no idea what happened to Tooori, he changed his cell number for the 4 time in a year and I cant get hold of him. Rhuan moving back to Bellville due to studies. But never fear, we got a bunch of newbies in. Well I don’t know if you can call them newbies with an average age of 30. But in the coming weeks they will be named and shamed on the blog.

04 May 2014
Venue: Mutual
Opponents: Durbanville B
Time: 12h00

Starting our team talk , our fearless leader made it clear to us that we shouldn’t get our hopes up and nor should we expect anything other than a snotklap. This may have been because he knows the boys from the Ville and on paper they seemed to be the more experienced team. This was based on the amount of knee guards their team was wearing.

The game started off well with good ball pace and the good basics .... then we made our first tackle and we got the ball. At was at this point that we realised that these hockey gods weren't so hot and can be tackled. We made a few solids passes and our confidence picked up. 5 minutes into the first half we realised that we had a chance. Some good passes and positive use of space and we were putting them under pressure.

We conceded the first short corner of the game. Durbanville opting for a variation slip. Their striker duffing his pass to the player charging at the far post, however this wounded rabbit bobbled its way past Tosser and Youngster and ended up in the back of the net. Mutual 0 – 1 Durbanville.

After that wake-up call we switched gears and besides a few counter attacked from Durbanville we camped in their half of the field for the remainder of the half.  Although unable to convert out possession into goals, this was still a huge confidence boost going into the second half.

A good team talk set the tone for the second half. We all went out there confidently, finding ourselves attacking more and putting their defence under a lot of pressure. We won a shortly and with stealth like sneakiness worked the ball back the player that is only known to us as Shibby. The slip coming from Tosser, 6Pack collecting the ball and showing great composure set up Shibby  to slot it in past the keeper to equal the score. Mutual 1 – 1 Durbanville.

There were chances going both ways with the scores level, both teams missing sitters! Shibby would like to remain nameless after, what can only be described as, trying to generate a tornado. Violently slashing at the ball in the circle and missing, causing huge winds in the opponents circle.

Never mind that crap - we had ourselves another beaut of a finish. Top class teamwork Mullet and TJ. From a short corner, well left by Shooter, Mullet received the ball outside of the D. He spotted TJ with a huge grin on his face shouting for the ball, with a near perfect slap and TJ diving for it to deflect it into the roof of the net. GOAL ! This has now made its way into the play book as one of our ‘variations’. Mutual  2 - 1 Durbanville

The game was not over yet. The next 10 minutes were the longest 10 minutes of our lives. I was counting in my head and it felt like we played an extra half. With Durbanville pushing hard for the equalizer. They were relentless, but I’m just glad they decided to mouth off to the umpire which ended in one of their players receiving a yellow. Followed by another yellow when they continued to mouth off. I am just glad Demon and Bastick decided to keep quiet for this game.

But as always with a lot of slowing down 16s, and occasionally ‘losing’ the ball, we defended well and held on for the victory. Well done to Sean and Justin for holding strong at the back for those last couple of minutes with Youngster having to save us a few times. I am sure we used all our “get out of jail free” cards for the season. Jono having a stellar game in the middle having to fill some big shoes as Petie-weepu was out sick and unfortunately  now has been dropped to the 2s, Jono was on the receiving end of a wild smash to the knee cap where he had to receive a couple of stiches near the end of the game with Speedo filling in for him in the middle.

Shooter doing his normal thing and controlling the game fantastically in the middle, I still don’t know how he manages to do it because im sure most of the spectators do more milage during the game that he does. Lol.
Special mention must go to Goose for awarding the 2 yellows, this still does not make up for the draw 2 years ago that cost us the perfect season….#JustSaying #WeWillAlwaysRemember

All in all, solid performance lads well done. First win of the season under the belt.  Looking forward to a good season form the Mutual SAD Mighty 3s. It seems that we have also lined up a sponsor for the season. Next we will be on SuperSport.lol

Final Score: 2-1

6Pack celebrating with us only realised an hour after the match that we had actually won after which he got a little emotional and was pushing for a team hug.
Man of the Match: Jono
Dick of the Day: Shibby

Yours in awesomeness
Tosser

Thanks to 6 Pack for the rough draft…..the really really rough draft. lol
