Winter League Game Week #9 - vs Conberg (Mens 3s)

Good morning guys

I never seem to get tired of saying this, the “Thorough bred 3s” are still unbeaten!
(Copy/paste). Still feeling the match from 12 hours ago in our legs and some of the boys feeling the brant’s and beers from the night before, we made our way thru to Stellenbosch at the crack of WhoCares for a childishly early game at 10h30.

Date: 13 June 2012
Time: 20h30
Venue: Mutual
Opponents: Conberg

Walking through snow to get to the field we all gathered at the astro to watch the ladies game on what would be the coldest night in history. Being asked to ‘Please keep quiet’ – by the umpire for alleged chirping from the stands. In our defence (and since both teams on the night had clean sheets it is allowed #TellTheMens2’s – Spoiler alert) it was a simple ‘Oooooooh’ when he didn’t see the slight deflection, which caused the ball the veer at a 90 degree angle.

Anyway, congrats to the ladies 2s for another victory against U-dubs , it was a fantastic game to watch. Mutual ladies 2’s 2 – 0 UWC. A few interesting tackles been thrown in and the UWC striker was entertaining. Apparently every time she loses the ball it is obstruction.

After our warm up we took the field, their captain arrived and the mind games started. Using my jedi mind tricks I convinced him to call flat. He lost the toss. I chose to play away from the sun, he actually had a confused look on his face. Basically I wanted Vis in our defensive D in the second half(This thought is the exact opposite if he is playing goalkeeper) and that all worked out.

We started the game in typical fashion with attack after attack. The Conberg defence having no idea what to do with us. They played with 2 high lying strikers which Caveman and Tosser had the ‘pleasure’ of marking. All that Conberg did was play river ball and this tactic lasted pretty much the whole game.

This proved to be turning into one of those extremely boring games where all they do is defend and try to keep the goal tally down to a minimum. The worst part is that it seemed to be working. Deep into the first halfs with the scores still dead locked we seemed to be making some better movement in the circle. Spud with a belter of a shot from top D, the keeper making a good save but unable to do anything about the follow up shot. Brown scooping the ball over the keeper who could do nothing else but watch the ball sail into the goals. Mutual 1 – 1 Conberg.

With the deadlock broken we pushed for that second goal. Mick pulling off some great tackles down the right hand side of the field  to keep the Conberg counter attack at bay. Shooter doing his job well and pushing Pete further forward to give us that extra player in attack. There were a few hiccups in defence where a Conberg player found himself in some space, but our solid defence was there to close down the gaps

Near the end of the first half, the constant attacking finally paid off. Spud finding himself in space in the D, popping the ball onto his reverse stick and smashing a ball into the bottom corner of the goals doubling our lead. Mutual 2 – 0 Conberg.

With the burners now going, we had Conberg on the back foot. Wanting to really finish them off in the first half and get the points in the back we carried on pushing. The Conberg keeper was having a stormer though which for Mutual was a bad thing. But just before the end of the half the Conberg defence was broken again. Demon breaking through and having a 1v1 with the keeper and smashing it past his right foot to extend our lead. Mutual 3 – 0 Conberg.

This brought about the end of the first half. Half team chat was just about trying to score more goals and dominating the last 25% of the field. Taking to the field again to start the second half, we were in for another annoying half with Conberg now putting one high lying striker and camping in their own half to defend and hopefully have one or two counters.

The whole half was full of missed chances and Conberg breaking down play, quite a destructive and negative game plan. But for them it worked. They were happy to give us the points, just not that extra bonus point. Wave after wave of attack was thrown at them. Once or twice they smashed river balls to their striker who looked like an asthma victim running up hill.

From the back the game was boring and I got stuck marking the high lying asthma patient. We shared a few jokes, most of the time when he was chasing after the ball and not getting to it in time. Id say, “Put off the treadmill when you start running” and “It feels like I am running up hill and the ball is rolling downhill”, he would reply.

Off one of the attacks the ball dropped to Blake on the p-spot. His favoured position, smashing the ball past the keeper and taking a deflection off Pete’s leg it landed up in the goals. When the umpire blew for a goal, Pete took a teaspoon of cement and ‘hardened the f*ck up’ and walked that pain off. We would take anything we could get to get us closer to that bonus point. Mutual 4 – 0 Conberg.

Which is exactly how the game ended. A quick mention must go to Rusty and his custard. Next time you are tired why not sub yourself if you want to sit on the bench. No need to shout ‘In the end there can be only one!!!’ (highlander theme song playing in his head) and trying to decapitate a player. Definitely a deserved card. Sherman could be heard from the back shouting “Rusty I hope you like beer son”. This will be noted for fines.

The worse and maybe even best part about the game, was seeing the players walk off the field like they had just lost. It is bad because we won and we should celebrate the victory. But in a sense it is good to see the guys setting such high goals for themselves. Wanting to push themselves for the maximum every week. 14 points out of a possible 15 in 5 days, I say well done lads.

Final Score Mutual 4 – 0 Conberg.

Enjoy the deserved 5 week break guys, club night tonight, team braai next week.
Next Fixture:

Wednesday 21st July @ Mutual
Time: 13h30
Opponents: Milnerton – 2nd on the log

But first the team braai on Friday, I can see Blake stocking up on banana’s and brooms. Keys to be dropped in the hat at the front door – swingers style. Saaaaaart!!

Super Hero's Club Night – 15th June 2012

After getting some supplies for the last club night of the half season, I was politely asked to pick up Andy and Dwight, I mean Blake and Brown since they are responsible lads and prefer not to drive under the influence. I knew I owed my scoring pair for all the hard work they had done this season and they deserved the off time. We were going to pick up Spud, but we were informed that he wasn’t allowed to go since players like Mick and Shooter booze too much and get a little messy.

So off to Mutual we were, thankfully there were other people dressed up and we didn’t look like complete noobs. Basil’s dream finally came through and he was able to dress like a woman. I think he came as Zena? Vis as InspectHerGadget, Piles as Captain Cock and Spur as Th Ass-asin. I think I got all of those right? The Men’s 1s and 2s had decided of the theme of SuperHero’s that didn’t make TV.

Besides the fact that Piles had built the biggest bonfire in history and we would only be eating on Sunday, things were looking up for the evening. I heard many comments flying around that there was no way that anyone would be able to beat the amazing Graffiti Party the previous month, but this looks like it could be turning into a close race for second place.

The award for best dressed went to Captain Cock, those pink tights really made his eyes pop! Best dressed woman was a three-way tie with the Tarty-Trio. Also there was a darts competition Sparky getting a huge total of 39 from 6 darts, narrowly beating off Agent’s left boot to take bottom spot. Basil came out tops thanks to his days as a hussler.

There were a couple of of raffle prizes that were handing out. Obviously with the 3s deciding to dominate in raffles as well, Blake walked away with a bottle. Some of the ladies 2s even put in the effort to get there after their game. Good Job.

As the evening was quieting down and it looked like everyone was going their own separate ways, someone (and  I still don’t know who this was) decided to shout “To the Ox”. But of course everyone thought this would be a marvellous idea – for some reason. So we all decided to make the 1km journey to the place where dreams are lost but the beer flows like water.

Blake making his usual exit with a Pick n Pay packet full of boeries and getting in the car and turning around and looking at Brown (face covered in chocolate alcoholic cream , eyeballs semi rolled back) realising he was completely smashed and that we should keep an eye on him before he starts hitting on the kitchen staff. Apparently Getrude behind the bar looks like quite a belter after a couple of brants. Probably the reason that I stay away from them.

Then the ladies decided to take over the karaoke evening. And OMF I have heard squealing cats sound much better. #ToldThem. And Agent with his eyes on the prize (see below). Bbbrrrrfffffftttt. Wa wa we wa.

Blake (or Dr. Saaaartenstein) was on hand to sign a few autographs. So good to see him giving back to the community, what a champ. We decided that it was time to make our way back home. Looking at Brown in his dodgy pleather jacket (making him look like Trinity from The Matrix) he looked ready for a nights work on Voortrekker.

The next mornings events were….lets just say eventful. Dodo getting really caught up in her game of hide and seek. Rumors of Deny getting and early morning eviction notice. And with a couple of people wasting their free minutes talking to peoples voice mail.

All in all another great night for the Green and Blue.
Whens the next one?

Mutual News Letter for Week #9

Well the first half of the season has almost come and gone, last few fixtures before we go on the looong 5 week break.

Winter League Game Week #10 - vs Van Der Stel (Mens 3s)

Good morning guys

I never seem to get tired of saying this, the “Thorough bred 3s” are still unbeaten!
(Copy/paste). Still feeling the match from 12 hours ago in our legs and some of the boys feeling the brant’s and beers from the night before, we made our way thru to Stellenbosch at the crack of WhoCares for a childishly early game at 10h30.

Date: 10 June 2012 - preplayed fixture
Time: 10h30
Venue: Stellenbosch
Opponents: Van der Stel

Arriving at the game, 6 Pack just didn’t look himself. Probably because the bar was closed. He was still nursing his ego after being given a shot of vinegar by two of his Ex’s who had been present at last night’s game. But all this soon changed at 10h00 when he came walking back with his morning beer.

Losing the toss for the second game in a row, but ending up playing away from the sun (so technically it’s a win in my books) we started off the game quite slowly still feeling last night’s match in our legs. But for some reason the brandts at the ECC (Edgemead Cricket Club) seems to make Blake’s legs work faster. He was treaded thru a great ball around the 25, narrowly slipping past a defender and 1 v 1 with the keeper he went for a jab (kinda miss hitting it) but ended up giving the keeper a nutty and getting our first goal of the day. Mutual 1 – 0 VD Stel.

Mutual were soon at it again with Spud and 6 Pack working well together to feed a ball through to Brown on the far post with another slap in. Mutual 2 – 0 VD Stel.

VD Stel thought it was time to attack. They decided the river ball approach was their best option. Although many of them were cut out by our outside links (Demon and Rusty) one or two seemed to sneak thru. Tosser running across to cover a ball in the corner that had somehow come through. Realising it wasn’t going to go out in time he took evasive action and somehow managed to scrimamage three (yeah I couldn’t believe my eyes either) VD Stel attackers. Shooter was calling for the ball line and Tosser just seemed to carry on running towards him.

The same thing happened on Cavemans side of the field, Caveman recovering well and feeding a ball to Shooter and sending us clear from danger. Sherman also getting his first touch on the ball in 80 minutes, he was so excited. With Mick pushing hard up the right as he did in the previous game and smashing balls into the circle, we dominated most of the first half. But we couldn’t seem to get that next break through.

And that’s how it ended at half time. With Mutual leading 2 – 0 over VD Stel.

The second half started a little sketchy, with VD Stel pushing forward. But the 3s defence (Also known as the ‘Wall’) kept their score line to 0. Winders listening well during the half time talk and hanging on the side line to stretch the field having acres of space of the left. Sometimes running for 15/20 meters before a VD Stel player went across to tackle him.

After all this attacking the second half dead lock was finally broken. This goal which can only be described as the goal of the season (for those at WPCC – it was so much better than that goal) from our 16 then ball went to Pete who say Winders in space on the left. Winders dummys his opposite number and flips a ball through to Demon. Pete continuing his run from the halfway line gets smashed the ball from Demon and with a glancing slap send the ball just outside far post where Brown (at full speed) dives at with an outstretched arm. The ball hitting the roof of the net and the VD Stel keeper with no chance. Mutual 3 – 0 VD Stel.

From then on we had one goal in mind, the bonus point. Pressing the VD Stel players like there was no tomorrow, we turned over the ball in their 25. Asking the players afterwards, no one is really sure what happened. But the ball popped out on their goal line and one of their defenders smashed at the ball and it hit the side netting. Pete was credited with the goal. Mutual 4 – 0 VD Stel.

With the bonus point in our sights we kept pushing with 8 minutes to go, desperately wanting to extend our lead at the top of the table. With VD Stel packing their circle with players they had another counter. From the 25 they smashed a ball to the far post where their right wing, trying to emulate Browns goal, narrowly missed. I am sure if you asked Caveman and Sherman they will tell you that they had it covered.

With the clock running out another goal mouth scramble resulted in Brown pushing the ball into the keeper twice, the keeper falling on his defenders stick, losing his own glove & stick and Brown sitting with the ball at far post for what seemed like 10 minutes. A gentle scoop past the crawling VD Stel defence and with that goal it put us in bonus point contention. Mutual 5 – 0 VD Stel.

With a few minutes left in the game we were awarded a short corner. Keen to get 6 Pack to score and hopefully get my beer for the assist I called a slip. A fantastic slip saw Shooter stretch for his life so that he could get his dummy in. 6 Pack controlling the ball with an open net to shoot at besides one defender on the post……he decides to hit the one defender. So a stroke was awarded, deciding to let 6 Pack finish the job. He sent keeper to his right and slid it past him on his left, 6 Pack said it must have been his body swerve. Mutual 6 – 0 VD Stel.

And with that say the end of the game. After being held to a 2 – 2 draw during our first encounter with Van Der Stel, it was good to get the bonus points off them the second time around. One more game and then we will get the well-deserved 5 week rest that we have been looking forward to.

Final Score Mutual 6 – 0 VD Stel.

Last game before the 5 week break:

Wednesday 13th June @ Mutual
Time: 20h30
Opponents: Conberg

Taking us to 8 wins for the season. Another clean sheet and another bonus point.
VIVA “Thorough bred 3s” VIVA!! FTW
Blake on 19 goals out of 9 games, Deeeeeer! – 3 in 2 games and it has been said he is out of form, but he remains the only player (that I know of) to score in every game so far this season.
Brown catching up to Blake and upping his tally to 10.
#TeamEdgemead with 29 between them – They have recently been compared to the strike pairing of vintage Manchester United’s Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke.

On a side note our 50th goal of the season went to 6 Pack. That sounds like he is going to be sponsoring the first round. Looking at the logs we are now in the driving seat with Milnerton on our heels which will be our first game back after the 5 week break.

Winter League Game Week #8 - vs Paarl (Mens 5s - Vikings)

Good morning boys and girls (and others)

The sixth game of our season was one filled with amazing goals, bodies being put on the line and rocking up on time....

Points to ponder:
1)      Timing is everything: Dan running onto the field 15seconds before the game starts
2)      Dan become hypnotised when someone does yardsticks in front of him
3)      Never say die

26 May 2012
Opponents: Paarl Men’s 2s
Venue: Paarl Gym Astro

As mentioned in point one, our left back decided to blame traffic for him over sleeping and decided to walk onto the field 15seconds before the game started. But that’s ok, because 45 seconds later he was in action munching his opposition winger and clearing the ball up to our forwards resulting in a good run up the line which was eventually cleared into the middle of their field. And this is where the game stayed for most of the first half. The link line showed they were capable of running and retreating to help in defence (see miracles do happen). – This lasted all of 15 minutes and for the last 20 minutes of the first half the backs must have felt like they were all on their own again.

During a period of play in the latter 10 min of the game one of the Paarl youngsters managed to hypnotised Dan with his yardsticks while standing still and eventually ran around him into the D but lucky Goose was there to put his body on the line (more to follow). Shortcorner for Paarl,  Mutual 0 - 1 Paarl.

----------------HALF TIME -----------------

The halftime chat as ever consisted of Speedbump telling everyone we’re a social side and are just here to have fun but we better win.....I’m confused....
Goose telling everyone how terrible the links are (It’s hot and I'm tired but I’m trying my best Goose I promise).
----------------2nd HALF-----------------

We started the first half well, working our way from the backs, through the link line into the forwards and Mullet finishing off a well worked team goal Mutual 1 – 1 Paarl. But this seemed to relax us and shortly afterwards Paarl put in 2 goals that seemed to take the wind out of our sails a bit. 3-1 to Paarl.

With 15 min left we managed to earn a free hit just outside their 25. I had pushed myself up to centre forward and leading away from where i wanted the ball then changing direction i suddenly found myself in SO much space (Thanks Tosser for the years of coaching – it finally came to use). Gareth (aiming at Mullet) caned the ball into their D and a perfect little touch from me saw a deflection fly between the keepers helmet and his glove, 3-2.

But once again, Paarl being Paarl struck back by winning  a shorty. The ever consistent and brave Bailly running first wave intercepted the ball off a deflection clipping his testicle (KRINGE). Another shorty to Paarl. Stepping up to run the new first wave I ran out, Paarl decided to hit the ball, lifting it into my arm and rendering me useless for the final 7 min of the game.

What actually happened next, I don’t know because I was too busy crying in a corner. I just know we got the ball (with 2min to spare), Bum found his way into the D, pulled the keeper and slipped the ball in on the angle.

Final Score 3-3.

A game we should have won, but showed our true fighting spirit and manage to still grab 2 points.
Next game:  White Stripes at home

Winter League Game Week #8 - vs WPCC (Mens 3s)

Good morning guys

I never seem to get tired of saying this, the “Thorough bred 3s” are still unbeaten!
(Copy/paste). We followed our trend from last week by dropping more dead weight to the 2s,so good byes were said to Sparky as we sent him packing.

Date: 9 June 2012
Time: 19h30
Venue: WPCC
Opponents: WPCC

After the Boks getting a win, we saw it was our chance to dominate. After having our pre-game chat which mostly consisted of finalising players for the following fixture and the team braai in the off season, we had a few minutes to warm up for the game. 6 Pack rocking up to the changing rooms with a Black Lable quarts means we knew he had already warmed up. Rusty coming back from injury opted to start bench for the first 5 minutes.

Deciding on our usual tactic to start the game off with a hard 5minutes, then play a harder 30minutes. We got off to a flyer with Blake, Brown and 6-pack combining perfectly and zig-zagging thru the WPCC defence (credit must go to the weave which was done at training during the week) like they were beacons. Blake getting on the end of the last pass, which was on the far post after they zig-zagged the keeper as well. Mutual 1-0 WPCC.

5 minutes into the game the flood gates then opened. I do apologise if I get the order of the goals wrong even thou for most of the match I was a spectator, but there were just so many to remember. Brown smashing a backstick shot (and in his words ‘it was a proper backstick shot, not a duff like our other strikers’) and doubling our lead. Mutual 2 – 0 WPCC.

With our strikers running riot and creating havoc in the WPCC 25, Blake ‘V-Roy’ pounced on another lose ball in the D to extend the score to Mutual 3 – 0 WPCC.

Around this time after a scuffle in the D with the WPCC defender basically stick checking Pete in the back, Blake decided to get involved #EdgemeadAlwaysHasYourBack (And your front). He politely informed the defender that if he ever did that again he would, “take his new stick and smash him in the f*&k*ng head”. The umpire did not approve of this colourful language and Blake got a well-deserved rest on the bench for 5 minutes.

Then it was Shooters chance to get involved, Tosser deciding to let him get a chance to drag against his former club. At the same time destroying Tosser’s chances of ever dragging again. Although it was going wide, it was deflected in by the post man. As we always say in the “Thorough bred 3s”, there is no place for a description next to the goal. So on the score sheet it will say ‘G.Cilliers’ – PC goal. Mutual 4 – 0 WPCC.

With Blake and Brown off the field (the 2 guys that inject at shorties) Tosser decided that his days of drag flicking were over and he should give injecting a chance unless he wanted to be sitting on the halfway line during shorties. Shooter signalling to Tosser that it was going to be coming straight back to him for a simple tap in. With an amazing pull out, Tosser runs (fast walk) for far post expecting to get on the end of that deflection. But I am sure all Shooter wanted was Tosser to get a front row seat to watch his drag sail into the bottom corner of the goals, cementing his spot as first choice drag flicker. Mutual 5 – 0 WPCC.

The half time whistle was nowhere to be heard. Mutual throwing wave after wave of attack at the WPCC defence. 6 Pack again in the mix of things, the unofficial ‘Stick block champion of the world’ easily making his way through the WPCC defence as if they weren’t there. Pushing the ballot Brown on the far post effortlessly for the tap in. Mutual 6 – 0 WPCC.

Spud, our youngster, not wanting to be out done but the old men upfront got on the end of a loose ball, beat one defender and popped it onto his reverse, squeezing the ball between the goal keeper and the near post. Giving the 3s a huge lead before half time. Mutual 7 – 0 WPCC.

Just before the stroke of half time a well worked move from Left to right form Caveman, to Pete, onto Mick who had been pushing hard up the right all match. The ball then going down the line to 6 Pack who then flipped it back to Pete. With a quick ball he found Demon around top D, who did a little pirouette on the spot and shoot. Mutual 8 – 0 WPCC.

And with that the half time whistle signalled. WPCC players rushed to the medical room for ice pack since they hadn’t been given a hiding like that since they were 4 and drew all over their parents wall with crayons. There was nothing really to chat about on the Mutual side. We decided to take the foot off the gas a bit to preserve energy for Sundays game.

With the start of the second half the pace of the game dropped quite a bit. We slowed the game down yet still managed to camp in our opponents half. The next 10 minutes we attacked the WPCC goal, with them managing one or two counter attacks which didn’t even reach our D. During the one attack after it hit a WPCC foot, Sherman could be heard in the goals, “Noooo, let him thru”. I think this was about the time when we realised that Sherman had got off the backboard, excited, to crunch a player. Who again didn’t even reach our circle.

Six pack got the ball in the province 25, beat the defender. With just the keeper to beat, he popped the ball to far post where Winders had set up camp and his spaza shop! A simple tap in was all that was needed. Mutuals first goal of the seconds half and 9th of the game. Mutual 9 – 0 WPCC.

The WPCC striker had been causing off the ball hassles the entire game and I am sure a few of the players were getting quite annoyed with him. Pete got most of it, with off the ball shoulders being exchanged. Tosser being called in to settle the matter, growing up on the streets of Edgemead where the motto is take no prisioners. With a background in MMA, he puts in a flat tackle and sends the attacker flying over his shoulder. The attacker not knowing what else to do grabs on to Tosser and brings him to the turf as well. After some quite spectacular ground and pound that Brock Lesner would be proud of, both players rose to their feet and custard was shown to the WPCC striker. #LovingIt

With the numerical advantage, we saw it fit to smash in a few more goals and push WPCC some more. We were quickly awarded a short corner which Shooter, being on fire, decided it was time to bury Tossers dreams of ever drag flicking again….EVER! He placed the ball between the keepers arm and leg to the right to slot home his hatrick and put us into double figures for the first time this season. Mutual 10 – 0 WPCC.

6 Pack had been begging for a goal all game, even using bribery by saying anyone who gives him an assist will be given beer. After 60 minutes of waiting 6-pack decided to take it upon himself to set up his own goal. 6 Pack took a free hit outside the 5 quickly and ran the ball towards the goals. Stick blocking anyone within a 10 meter radius, I am pretty sure he stick blocked three Mutual players as well. Running along the base line we could smell the beer flavoured perspiration rolling down his forehead, desperately wanting his goal. Ending up 1v1 with the keeper, first deciding to stick block the keeper as well then realising it would be easier to pop the ball through the keepers legs. Mutual 11 – 0 WPCC.

With the game done and dusted most of us could already taste the victory beers we were about to have. When we made a last push for the goals, a ball smashed all the way from outside the 25 saw Brown running across the keeper and deflecting the ball behind himself and around the keeper to finish off the game. Mutual 12 – 0 WPCC.

Final Score Mutual 12 – 0 WPCC

Another victory, another clean sheet and another bonus point. Most of the spectators (otherwise known as our fans) felt really sorry for our keeper Sherman. His game consisted of basically fetching the ball when it went out for a 16 or out over the side line. He could have played the game in flip flops since WPCC didn’t even manage to get one shot on target.

Last Game before the 5 week break:

Wednesday 13th June @ Mutual
Time: 20h30
Opponents: Conberg

Taking us to 6 wins for the season. Securing our second clean sheet and third bonus point.
VIVA “Thorough bred 3s” VIVA!! FTW
Blake on 18 goals out of 8 games, flame on ginger! – His goal tally is finally legal to order a bevy!
Brown finally hitting form with 7

Winter League Game Week #8 - vs Stellenbosch A (Mens 2s)

Opponents: Maties A
Venue: Mutual
Date: 10 June 2012
Time: 13h30

The last game before the mid season break was against Maties A. We gathered at Mutual astro on Sunday afternoon with several of us shaking off the last of our hangover compliments to Panda’s 21st and various other events from the night before. We knew from the word go we were in for a long hard game today, especially with only one on the bench! We also welcomed Giggles and Giger to the team seeing as they see Province practice as more important than Mutual training and Vis decided to drop them.

The game started with play being pretty open but Maties persistent running quickly began to take its toll on the 2s. There wasn’t much created from either side in terms of chances but Maties grabbed the opener after a pass across goal was intercepted by Curly however he couldn’t control it and put it past Giger. (Tosser - so in other words it was an own goal...) Maties then began to run the show and picked up another goal from a shorty after they put in a ripper of a drag! We had several good movements but we couldn’t get much momentum and struggled to create chances with many balls coming out the back and finding strikers without any options.

Maties added a third goal before we finally decided to put a ball in the Maties goal instead of our own #tellCurly. I played a ball out from the back which found Carl who drove forward and gave Giggles a superb through ball which he received in the D and proceeded to scrimmage the keeper before cooly slotting a close range back stick.
Mutual 1 - Maties 3 and this is how the half ended.

We went into the second half with a change in tactics and with the momentum after we scored. We had made life difficult for Maties by using a half court press and as a result they struggled to find passes. We were marking superbly and countering well but we just struggled to make that final pass work. Eventually as the legs began to give in we made a mistake at the back and Maties grabbed a fourth.

We found a second win and began to attempt a comeback in the second part of the half but we just couldn’t break the Maties backline even with our youngsters, namely Carl, Giggles and Patches, creating havoc showing off some dazzling skills.

So it ended Maties 4 – Mutual 1.

Perhaps too harsh a score line for our performance but Maties were the better side on the day. We go into the break knowing we are condemned to the bottom six and we can only focus on looking to win our last few games to secure a solid log position. Its been a tough season so far but now the lads have just gotta keep working during the break to ensure we pick up good results.

Mutual News Letter for Week #8

Looking at the fixtures for this weekends games.
Ladies GC have a very important fixture coming up against Central.
The unbeaten 'Thorough-bred 3s' look to extend thier lead at the top. I think conditioning will play a huge role with 3 games in 6 days. We will see if Blake's "brant diet" actually works and if Browns "Castle carbo-loading" is a bunch of bullshit or not.
Mens 1s-3s have Sunday morning games. Most of them will still have their Tiger Tiger stamp on their arm.

Pile's unbeaten ladies are in the hood this weekend. Hope Piles gets some over time or danger pay for that one.

Winter League Game Week #7 - vs Stellenbosch B (Mens 2s)

Opponents: Maties B
Venue: Stellenbosch
Date: 4 June 2012
Time: 12h00

Game number two of the double header. We headed out to the infamous lil town that is Stellenbosch relatively early on Sunday morning still licking our wounds from Saturdays game, but we were all fired up and ready to pick up a victory.....except for Sparky. At around 11:45 I phone him to find out where he is. The phone call went like this: Deny – “Sparky, where the fuck are you?”, Sparky (sounding dreadfully hungover) – “oooohhhhhhhh the game starts at 12”. I think we have lost count of his number of coach fails. However we had Vis to provide us with our first useful coaching of the season. Another missing soldier was Glenzo, whose ‘GPS’ had apparently sent him on the wrong route, so we went into the game without a coach and a bench of one.

After several minutes we realised it was going to be a long day, with the sun beating down, legs buggered from yesterdays’ game and the Maties players running around like rabbits on ecstasy (which Bob probably sold to them). This eventually paid off as they grabbed the opening goal following a dazzling run from one of their strikers. We then grabbed a goal back compliments to Patches. We however let another goal slip in when we failed to clear a ball in the D (I basically passed it across the goal and Boogs missed it and the Stellies striker slapped into open goals).

With the 2s trailing 2 – 1 we began to find some momentum with the backs working well together for the first time this season to create chances up front. We eventually won a shorty, zig zag was the call...Bob stops the ball, lays it to Curly to avoid the 1st wave and at this point Curly was probably thinking “pass it to Bob so he can just miss again, I’m gonna shoot”...this proved to be a great train of thought as he slotted his flick to make it 2 – 2 and led to the creation of the “Zig”. This is how the score stayed until half time.

Both teams came out fighting from in the second half, but the ecstasy was clearly beginning to wear off (Thats what happens when you buy ecstasy from a Mexican) and Mutual began to dominate the game. We won a shorty and the call was for a straight drag. Glenzo obviously noted Bob was taking the flick so he ‘duffed’ his push to Bastick (anyone noticing a trend here??) who then nailed a backstick to make it 3 – 2 to the Green and Blue. This put plenty of wind in our sails and we proceeded to take the game away from Maties through some great attacking play and solid defense (about bloody time!).

Glenzo had a golden opportunity to score his first goal for Mutual since his return, but he duffed his shot terribly (still made more contact than Vis did though). Glenzo made up for this blunder as he scrimmaged his way into the D and set up Patches for our 4th of the game. Bastick then soon added a 5th to make it 5 – 2 to Mutual.

Sparky showed no signs of raging at Tiger til the early hours of the morning when we made a run into the D and released a screamer of a backstick which the keeper managed to get a touch on which hit the post and went out for a long corner. Maties grabbed a consolation goal late in the game but it was too little too late as Mutual took a much needed 5 – 3 win.

A much improved performance from the team and showed ourselves that we can play quality hockey when we put our heads as well as our hearts into it. Patches had an absolute ripper making Maties players look like beacons and of course scoring 2 goals. Good to see youngsters stepping up! Also a huge thanks to our crew of supporters that brought the Green and Blue vibe out to Stellenbosch, it was hugely appreciated. Your cheers/jeers really helped us to a victory.

Winter League Game Week #7 - vs White Stripes (Mens 5s - Vikings)

Date: 02 June 2012
Tine: 13:30
Venue : Mutual
Opposition : White Stripes

Game Day!

Saturday the 2nd of June was a big game day for the Vikings. Currently we were sitting in 6th position, with the week’s previous game ending in a draw, which was very lucky in the end, but we will move on from that; and the opponents, white stripes, being in 2nd. A win against them would not only mean points but also a good jump up the log which was the main aim.

From the start of the game it was clear what the opposition was keen to do. Throw the overhead, get the break away and put it into the box. Within the first 5 minutes, this is exactly what they did, and it resulted in a short-corner. With the pressure on the defence and the fact, White Stripes had a guy who could drag flick, the shorty could go either way, which in this case, went to the left post which was saved and knocked out of play for a long corner and so the blood pressure of Capitan Speedo dropped and the team could breathe again.

Throughout the first half the game was controlled around the centre of the pitch, with Vikings having good opportunities in their D, but just struggling to finish off. Likewise for the opposition, but where the Vikings were standing strong was in the structure. Compared to previous games, the guys held their positions and kept White stripes at bay. Communication was good between the team, and even the opposition with Goose having some “friendly banter”.

The end of the 1st half and the score remaining 0 – 0. The score was a good reflection but it was time to put the game away in our favour and leave the White Stripes high and dry.

Start of the second half and the idea from the opposition was still the same, and our defence was still playing the role of a good latex manufacturer and not letting anything in. The chances were getting closer and closer, with PJ and Mullet, trying new things in the D for short-corners which were sending their defence into confusion. We could see they were getting tired and now throwing everything at it, and admittedly they were closer than some of us would like to remember. But the break through came in the 60th minute or so, just after time resumed after Goose decided it was his time for an Oscar, which was an ok performance but the finishing was had nothing to be desired. The ball was taken into the D, passed around to the left, then the right, and eventually put into the back of the goal by Randy.

Score 1 – 0 to Vikings. Which meant pressure and lockdown on everything.

10 minutes to go felt like another half all together, but eventually the final whistle blew, the result – Vikings take the win 1 – 0. A great performance by Vikings who played exciting hockey and definitely more to come!

Winter League Game Week #7 - vs Durbanville (Mens 3s)

Good morning guys

I never seem to get tired of saying this, the “Thorough bred 3s” are still unbeaten!
(Copy/paste). Seems like we dropped our dead weight between the posts aka Vis and were rewarded with another clean sheet.

Date: 2 June 2012
Time: 18h00
Venue: Mutual
Opponents: Durbanville

While watching the 4s play before our game, how I have loved curtain raisers – although normally the 1s are our opening act so was a good change of scenery to see a different side be rewarded by playing before us. Anyway back to my point, the few of us that were there noticed most of Durbanville’s side had arrived 2 hours before the time kitted and were warming up on the grass.

I have never seen a team so eager to get an ass whooping. Our pre-game routine went pretty much the same as always, gathering in the changing rooms. Chirping Spud/Mick about broomsticks and bananas. Getting out there 25 minutes before the game to have a warm up jog, (Although there was talk about booting Sparky after he made us look like complete chops during his ‘Dynamic warm up’) 6-pack arriving during warm up and lighting a smoke and of course Team-Africa MIA. No that doesn’t stand for with Mia, I mean Missing In Action.

Unfortunately I was unable to psych out the opposing captain this week and we made the right call winning the toss. I did however use my jedi mind game on him to give me Goose as an umpire in the second half. At least that was we wouldn’t get a short corner disallowed because it ‘didn’t hit the back board’ there would however be a lot worse things about to happen but we will get to that.

Durbanville tried a sneaky UCT tactic throwing an overhead for their first move. This time however we were ready for it. Shouting ‘MY BALL’ from the top D, the Durbanville players parted like the Red Sea, giving Tosser plenty of time to move the ball to safetly. We decided to take the same approach we took against pinelands and completely dominate the game from the start and it wasn’t long until dividends paid out from all this pressure. ‘Simon’ vRoy Tap-in Blake pouncing of the loose ball after the Durbanville keeper made a save. Mutual 1 - 0 Durbanville.

We scored almost immediately again, another Blake tap-in after being slipped the ball from 6-pack. And we all know Blake, he never misses from p-spot. This man is on fire. Mutual 2 - 0 Durbanville.

Durbanville had their fair share of counters in after we took the two goal cushion. Mick and Caveman proving why they are part of the 3s solid defence coming away with the ball during 2 and sometimes 3 on 1 situations. Shooter and Pete controlled the middle as always and we started to dominate again. Spud running circles around their defence like he was on Redbull, these old men hate chasing kids around.

Tosser somehow finding himself in space in the circle, no idea what he was doing there or actually what happened, but the ball went behind for a long corner. Racing, speed walkers style, to the sideline and after what seemed like 5 tries, he took a the long corner quickly and smashed the ball into the circle to find Scooter. Scooter making no mistake….this time and finishing off to extend Mutual lead and put us that much closer to our bonus point. Mutual 3 - 0 Durbanville.

With that the half time whistle went. I think Tosser has been keeping the same half time team talk we had on week 1. ‘Carry on doing what we are doing, just do it better and score more goals. If we out score our opponents we will win’

With those motivating words we took the field for the seconds half. And this was to be the longest half EVER. Let me quickly paraphrase the next 20minutes. Their umpire missed 4 cardable back sticks in the circle – 2 of which could have been flicks. Goose not wanting to feel left out didn’t card their captain for a more obvious and blatant lazy foot than the worst we have seen from Bollie. I mean come on, he didn’t even put up his hand before he was about to stick out his foot. (We all love Bollies premature apologies). With our base camp fully set up and stocked on the Durbanville 25 we continued to push at them with no luck.

Then after a quick consultation with Shooter, Tosser decided to change the formation to 3-3-4. Throwing Winders upfront who even after the game had no idea what was going on. With 4 strikers we would hopefully get on the end of all those missed chances. And this formation change proved to work wonders, ‘on form’ Blake turning up in the right place at the right time getting on the end of a cross to put us with in one goal of the bonus point we deserved. Also taking Blake to another hatrick, when a striker scores a hatrick he might have been lucky. When he gets his second hatrick you think that the first one wasn’t a fluke. But when he does it again for the third time, making it a hatrick of hatricks in consecutive game you know the guy is on fire. FLAME ON GINGER!! Mutual 4 - 0 Durbanville.

At this point the Durbanville captain approached me and asked why we were chirping their umpire. I told him very bluntly it was because he was shit. So he asked why we were doing this because we were four goals up and there wasn’t really a difference how much we scored. Bonus point you noob! With that he put his tail between his legs and shut up. A wonderful ‘KOF’ moment shared between captains.

The Durbanville defence seemed like beginner surfers having wave after wave of Mutual attack smashed at them. Finally after many many short corner appeals, Goose got involved and awarded a short corner in the other umpires D. Deciding that our straight drags weren’t working, we thought why not give it back to Blake, since this was around the P-spot area and we know he is deadly. Shooter faking a drag and pushing it along the ground to Blake who made no mistake slotting in the bonus point. Mutual 5 - 0 Durbanville.

With our defence tightening up as if we saw the Durbanville strikers with broomsticks, we decided to hold off and protect out bonus point for the last few minutes. But our strikers had other ideas, forcing a shorty in the dying moments. Now as I am sure a lot of you are well aware, the “Thorough bred 3s” are very involved in charity work and today was no different. They decided to give the last shorty of the match to Tosser so that he could drag flick. And he didn’t disappoint at all. Sorry that was a typo,he did disappoint, the weak attempt being saved but the keeper only to fall to Spud on top D. Spud couldn’t believe his luck, ran in and smashed the ball with all his might, only for Scooter to get on the end of it and claim the goal. Mutual 6 - 0 Durbanville.

I notice there is one person that we haven’t mentioned in this entire match report…so ‘Sherman’.
The most he did during the game was fetch a river ball that Durbanville played that went out for a 16. His most boring game of hockey in the colours of green and blue to date. But he proved again that he can do what Vis can’t, another clean sheet.

Final Score Mutual 6 – 0 Durbanville

Looking at the logs, I think most of the side will have to be treated for chronic nose bleeds we are so high up. #JustSaying

Winter League Game Week #7 - vs Central (Mens 2s)

Opponents: Central
Venue: Vygieskraal
Date: 3 June 2012
Time: 15h00

The first of our games in this weekends’ double header was against the Central 2s. We gladly welcomed the legend that is Glenzo back to the team! As a result Vis moved up to the 1s and we had a feeling we got the better part of the deal....however we then remembered we still had Bastick  and Raff in the team.

With a new formation for the game we looked the better side from the word go taking control of the match early on with Central not able to get any circle entries. We however didn’t make much of our dominant play with no one stepping up to finish. We then were struck by our old foe, shorties. Central won shorty and neatly finished it to take a 1 – 0 lead. This left the backline frustrated as we had prevented them from taking any shots at goal. Central managed to win another shorty before the half and yet again put it away. We had our chances at the other end but we were met by a very good Central keeper who seemed to be saving everything with ease.

The half ended 2 – 0 to Central with the 2s very frustrated as Central had not had a single open play opportunity.

The second resulted in play opening up as the legs began to get tired. As we tried to push forward Central would hit us on the counter and were creating chances but the defence were doing a good job of keeping them out. We were struck by some terrible umpiring yet again, as Central were awarded a dubious shorty which they managed to put away. With the 2s being 3 goals down we began to throw everything forward and with legs beginning to suffer we saw some interesting decisions regarding players positions, for example; who thought it would be a good idea to put Bastick at left half!! #CoachFailAgain.

Through a good counter Central added a 4th but the 2s continued to show heart and to look for a goal. Our best chance came after a top ball by Bob to Patches in the D which had us all thinking goal time....but he managed to cock it up just like hed did with his p – flick #NoBMT.

The game ended Mutual 0 - 4 Central.

A game which we could have won but simple mistakes let us down yet again. But nothing we can do but look forward and learn from our mistakes. Oh and welcome back Glenzo!!!
