Game
Day!
Saturday
the 2nd of June was a big game day for the Vikings. Currently we
were sitting in 6th position, with the week’s previous game ending in a draw,
which was very lucky in the end, but we will move on from that; and the
opponents, white stripes, being in 2nd. A win against them would not
only mean points but also a good jump up the log which was the main aim.
From
the start of the game it was clear what the opposition was keen to do. Throw
the overhead, get the break away and put it into the box. Within the first 5
minutes, this is exactly what they did, and it resulted in a short-corner. With
the pressure on the defence and the fact, White Stripes had a guy who could
drag flick, the shorty could go either way, which in this case, went to the
left post which was saved and knocked out of play for a long corner and so the
blood pressure of Capitan Speedo dropped and the team could breathe again.
Throughout
the first half the game was controlled around the centre of the pitch, with
Vikings having good opportunities in their D, but just struggling to finish
off. Likewise for the opposition, but where the Vikings were standing strong
was in the structure. Compared to previous games, the guys held their positions
and kept White stripes at bay. Communication was good between the team, and
even the opposition with Goose having some “friendly banter”.
The
end of the 1st half and the score remaining 0 – 0. The score was a
good reflection but it was time to put the game away in our favour and leave
the White Stripes high and dry.
Start
of the second half and the idea from the opposition was still the same, and our
defence was still playing the role of a good latex manufacturer and not letting
anything in. The chances were getting closer and closer, with PJ and Mullet,
trying new things in the D for short-corners which were sending their defence
into confusion. We could see they were getting tired and now throwing
everything at it, and admittedly they were closer than some of us would like to
remember. But the break through came in the 60th minute or so, just
after time resumed after Goose decided it was his time for an Oscar, which was
an ok performance but the finishing was had nothing to be desired. The ball was
taken into the D, passed around to the left, then the right, and eventually put
into the back of the goal by Randy.
Score
1 – 0 to Vikings. Which meant pressure and lockdown on everything.
10
minutes to go felt like another half all together, but eventually the final
whistle blew, the result – Vikings take the win 1 – 0. A great performance by
Vikings who played exciting hockey and definitely more to come!
