25 January 2011 - UCT - B (Indoor)

Good morning boys

Two games under our belts, what a great come (on the) back. Few things before our game on Sunday @13h30 vs WPCC A.
1.       Again we talk about holding on too long at the back, and sometimes getting caught in possession. Rather wing the ball up the line to no one so we can set up for a 16, than give away possession just outside our own circle.
2.       I think there were a few times when guys would rush into tackles when they didn’t need to.
3.       In the first half especially, the middle man roamed quite freely, glad we sorted that out in the second half.

25 January 2011
Venue: Wynberg Military Base
Opponents: UCT B

Well it was UCT’s toss to lose….and they did.
Meaning Vis finally won a toss. What a good start to the match.

In comparison to the second half the first half was a bit weak. I don’t think either side dominated. A few mild attempts on goal. 2 well worked shorties, 6-pack missing twice after being slipped a superb pass from top D…im not mad, just disappointed.

I think UCT scored first. Fridge didn’t even see it. He will still try defend himself saying someone obstructed his view…blah blah blah, you supposed to stop the ball.
After a well worked build up and a quick one two between Team Vis and the new cap Piles, we hit back with an equaliser. The rest of the half was pretty mediocre. With some good chances going amiss and a few balls rolling across the opponents goal line needing only a slight touch, but no one could get a knick on it.
Special mention must go to Piles short corner interception. Would have been interesting if there had still be time left in the first half

In other news, congratulations to Team Vis who has been given a trial for an overseas side, I thought id let you and everyone else know at the same time. After the game I was approached up stairs where the guys had been videotaping our match. They commented on his skill, ball control and how he outshone everyone else in the second half. Unfortunately the manager of the side was not able to fly down and watch the game, but I think after viewing the footage of the match Vis will be getting a call from Leeds United very soon.
They did however ask me why we were all carrying sticks, I politely smiled and shrugged.

And back to the game. The second half had basically just got underway when a costus move saw UCT gain possession and score. We barely managed to centre off and they were awarded a short corner which again they managed to score. So 2 goals down in the first minute of the second half.

We seemed to go into defence mode for a while and seemed to be scrambling around. But the score line stayed the same. We started to build momentum and a well worked move down the left saw Piles get the ball and sneak a cheeky reverse stick shot thru the keepers legs……this seems to be a trend after the two nutmegs in the previous game.

After the match I went home and thought about the third goal……I still can’t find the words to describe the “shot” on goal, which im sure had it not taken the deflection would have been well off target. Calling it a wounded rabbit would be a complement. A lifeless, semi retarded, broken lap rat might even sound faster than it was…..but who cares, a goal is a goal. Team Vis to the rescue again with another equaliser.

With a head of steam we kept pressing and finally got ourselves another shorty. Learning from our mistakes in the first half, we decided not to slip the ball to 6-pack, with Pablo converting the short corner from top D. Just a little note, Pablo said the ball went along the ground. When in actual fact the ball ended up waist high. Begs the question whether he actually aims at all, but once again a goal is a goal. It doesn’t matter how we score as long as the ball ends up in the back of the net….just not ours.

Sadly UCT came back with another short corner. Fridge barely smelling it.lol
After that the next 3 or 4 shorties were well defended. Vis coming out fast and smothering the shot or getting a nice deflection saving a goal.

It was interesting after the game when no one knew the correct score. We had us winning 5-4, 4-3, losing 5-4 and a draw of 4-4. But I think getting points off every game we have played so far is a great start to the season. Also it must be fantastic management.

With regards to match tactics, if you happen to be at the Met on Saturday and bump into a WPCC player, buy him a shot of tequila!
