31 January 2012
Venue: Sunningdale
Opponents: Pinelands Veterans
Things to work on in the game.
1: Shorty defence still needs work
2: Composure and possession of and on the ball
3: Better runs from the forwards
With our 2nd game in 3 days, the squad arrived fairly relaxed and ready to play their 1st game at Sunningdale against one of the strongest and most experienced sides in the league. With 2 more changes to the team, the side must surely be wondering if the team will ever stay the same. On that note, welcome to Luke (Skywalker) and LG.
The game started very slowly partially down to the fact that every1 was slipping around like crazy on the new turf. From there both sides played structured hockey and apart from a Pinelands shorty goal the 1st half had nothing good to speak of. Mutual 0- 1 Pine Vets Half-time
The 2nd half picked up from the word go and now that Mutual had the new ref in their attacking D, it became much easier. After both sides having a good chance or two, it became apparent that the 2nd half may actually show a good game. With Skywalker crunching anything that moved down the right flank, coupled with 6Pack running people over, we had the edge mentally. With Dutch and Import giving some good through-balls to Fanny, LG and Bondi, the breakthrough was only a matter of time.
After a pass to LG on the left, he gave it to Bondi who ran circles around 2 defenders and proving it was time for them to hit the retirement home. He ran baseline and gave an inch perfect ball for Fanny to tap home. Mutual 1- 1 Vets
With the game much more open and chances at both ends, good movement from Vets gave them an overlap and they deservedly won a shorty which they scored. Mutual 1- 2 Vets
With Mutual pushing higher and higher up the field, chances were coming and eventually a shorty was earned. Import, having missed 2 already (his 1st 2 of the season), made sure this time in the bottom corner. Mutual 2- 2 Vets With time short, a Vets attack was broken down expertly by Skywalker and Dutch. After Dutch's great pass found Bondi close to top D needing to beat one defender and the goalie. After a pull better than one in a nightclub, he got in the D and his shot wrong-footed the keeper. Mutual 3- 2 Vets
It was still left to the team to defend 2 shorties, yet Giger did just enough to keep the scoreline the same.
End score: Mutual 3- 2 Vets
Well done to the 2 more debutants Skywalker and LG.
