2nd team Captain Match Report – KC March Easter Tournament 2012
Game 1
(2s vs Hornets)
Venue: Vygieskraal
The 2s somehow managed to gather at Vygieskraal without any of us getting mugged/hijacked/sold tik/shot on our way to through Athlone on Friday afternoon looking to get our pre-season tournament off to a solid start. Due to several members of our team in KES and Ninja running the Two Oceans, we bolstered our side (or hindered, depends on how look at it) with a couple 3s players (Tosser - and one Ex-Mutual player #TooSoon).
Our opposition were older than us and we definitely thought we had a chance, however they scored an early goal and it was a battle from then onwards. We slowly started to find our groove but it was still 1 – 0 at half time. In the second half we upped our game and started to dominate but our finishing was somewhat lacklustre (Tosser - Good word, #ButMispelt - lackluster) with several chances going begging. As the game started to reach the death, the game opened up and eventually some quick thinking by Sparky allowed him to smash a through ball from the 25 which Winders somehow deflected beautifully into the roof of the net (black magic) (Tosser - After this performance somehow Winders was dropped from the 3s to the 2s...I have no idea why). This is how the game ended with the scores level at 1 – 1. It was clear that there was PLENTY room for improvement in the next few games
Game 2
(2s vs St Patricks)
Venue: Vygieskraal
With the legs feeling a lil worse for wear we entered our second game of the day looking to get a result to put us top of the pool. We dominated the first 5 minutes of the game and then we decided we felt sorry for the opposition and allowed them to score an early goal to boost their confidence. That turned out to be a bad decision.
We managed to pull a goal back through Rusty burying a shot in the bottom left corner from an angle. 1 – 1 at halftime. The game opened up in the second half and the pace picked up with the contest getting heated between the players. Then it fell to pieces for Mutual. First Sparky was deemed to have elbowed a kid in the head and was shown custard. This was a rubbish call based on the fact that the kid was almost shorter than Bastick and have you seen the size of Sparky!!
Nevertheless we went a man down (coach fail). Not more than two minutes later I made what must have been the best tackle of the game in the D (Tosser - just because its your only tackle doesn't make it the best tackle), cleanly taking the ball, only for it to be deemed a foul and a shorty was awarded which St Patricks converted (even the Raff himself would have said play on) . From that point our game went to the dogs and St Patricks added another goal to their tally.
Game 3
(2s vs Phoenix)
Venue: Vygieskraal
Day 2 of the Easter Festival saw the Mutual 2s take on Phoenix, with Mutual still looking for their first win. Once again we fell behind early and we soon found ourselves 2 – 0 down and struggling to contain our opposition. We went into half-time 2 – 0 down.
The second half was a different story with the lads showing some great character and heart to continue working hard for a result. We dominated possession and late-ish in the second half Bastick scored from a shorty - yes, miracles do happen (Tosser - #GooseRatio, 1 out of 5). Then the impossible happened, Bastick scored his second to bring the score to 2 – 2. This is how it ended and after about 5 minutes of deliberation between the officials we went into a shootout.
Thus began the longest shootout EVER!! Both teams missed their first two chances but I slotted our first shootout and Bastick added our second while Phoenix had yet to score. They eventually slotted two goals with us missing the last of our 5 initial shootouts.(Tosser - Lance, Bruce and Dutch missing the 1v1s....not sure why this was left out #SaveFace) It then went to sudden death. We thought we had won it at one stage however a penalty goal was awarded to Phoenix (didn’t know we were playing rugby). About 5 years later Basil scored his 5th goal of the day (Tosser - three 1v1 goals) - I swear a pig hit me on the head at this stage and Phoenix missed and we took the victory. The game ended with both teams in surprisingly high spirits.
Game 4
(2s vs Beaufort West)
Venue: Vygieskraal
This was the ‘Plate’ final of the tournament. With Sparky and Curly unable to play (Vice Captain and Coach fail) Tosser helped me organize some youngsters from his 3s side to play for us to fill the void left. Wish we had selected them ahead of Goose from the outset.
Spud and Mick filled in well (Tosser - see them in #NewRecruits #1). Both teams were looking raggered and it was a rather open game with each team having patches of domination. However our poor performance in the final third let us down and Beaufort West took their chances to earn a well deserved 2 – 0 win. Our finishing is definitely a point we need to work on for the rest of the season.
Result: Mutual 0 – Beaufort West 2
Yours in averageness
