Winter League Game Week #1 - vs Bellville (Ladies 1s)

Date: 14 April
Venue: Mutual
Opponent: Bellville
Time: 15h00

Team:   Crystal, Bridge, Apple, USA, Tazz, Stitch, BonBon, McDiver, Snail, Dodo, Haidee, Rocky, TNT, Dani
Coach: Staples

Mutual CPUT ladies were given the opportunity to play in LGC this year! A lot of the ladies were nervous about playing GC because we have only been in TC for 3 years and we slowly making our way up the table in that league. But we aren’t the type of team to pass on an opportunity like that so we grabbed it with both hands. Yes Tosser, with Both Hands!! (Tosser – Like I know most of the ladies in the 1s do….#JustSaying)

Ladies 1s started a ritual last year where by the Coach would give us a word to take with us into each game. This games word was ‘Smart’. Reason why Staples chose this word was because she wanted us to: Play smart hockey, and not to make silly mistakes.

Match day finally arrived and the team was nervous but excited about playing against Bellville. First GC game ever for a lot of the players so yes, the palms were sweating and hearts were racing. The game started off a little shaky. Nerves were definitely showing. Bellville side had a lot of young players which meant a lot of running for us. If I’m not mistaken Bridge’s watched clocked her running a total of 8.9km in the game. WOW!!! Pretty hectic for a game of hockey if you ask me. Now I know why Staples always says: ‘let the ball do the work’.  (Tosser – or work the balls…like I always say)

Bellville dominated most of the first half. The half time score was 5-1 down, McDiver being the goal scorer for Mutual. Half time talk was motivating. The great thing was that the team didn’t drop their heads even though they were 5-1 down. This for me was inspiring. There might have been a tear or two. (Tosser – Did you know tear are the best lubricant, well according to Jimmy Carr)

Ladies Started the Second half pumped up and ready. It was noticeable that players were starting to play from the heart. We had more opportunities in our attacking D. Much more than in the first half, including two Short corners. Unfortunately we didn’t score from any of them, but come on give us a break; we honestly didn’t think we ever would, considering we were playing a GC team.

We finished the game 9-2. Snail being the goal scorer in the second half. What a cracker, I must admit, even though we lost this game, I had a joy in my heart knowing we didn’t concede our first game with double digits like the Men’s 1s in their first game in GC… tell them. (Tosser – BOOOOOM she just went there…)

Final score Mutual 2 - 9 Bellville

Always keen,
Spur, Gina and lets not forget the infamous MEDUSA!!!!

  1. sho Spur, please check your facts next time!
We only lost 0 - 7 to Pinelands in our opening match of MGC.
It was in fact the second match against WPCC that we went for maximum, 1 - 10, LOKL.
My eyes still water and my bum clinches when I think back to that game =)

  2. well someone obviously bought a new couch and wants to try it out....
Although back in those days all the players in the side drivers licences....I think Men's 1s should start a lift club group on BBM
