This
being a game against the TC newcomers, Somerset West, the 2s were finally
looking to get their first points of the season. After an even opening to the
game Somerset West managed to grab a very soft goal, as a result of Mutual not
being able to clear an attack effectively, which seemed to float into the goals
in slow motion. Yet again the 2s found themselves chasing the game. Both teams
had their chances at either end in the first half with neither team being able
to convert. Mutual had several chances with Patches blazing a backstick over
the goals, the ball was rumoured to have landed somewhere in town along with
several wayward shots from our strikers.(Tosser - The ball was found next to a soccer ball....probably Sergio Ramos' penalty miss from the Champions League)
The 2s biggest chance came through Vis
who broke away and had a one on one with keeper, who he scrimmaged badly, only
to pass the ball to the defender on the line who had managed to get back in
time to cover. Mutual defended well, especially Boogs who was having an
absolute ripper at the back. The first half ended with Somerset West being a
goal up. (Tosser - Boogies nose when to commit to a tackle - yes it was weak, but that just happened.)
The
second half started badly for Mutual as Somerset West grabbed their second goal
of the game compliments of some good play on their part. Mutual then seemed to
drop their heads and we didn’t play all that well until Somerset West picked up
a green card for a rather horrendous tackle (or quality stick block on our
part). We started to create chances and thought we had grabbed a goal back when
Bastick had the easiest (yes, don’t worry, we told him) of chances with the
open goals about a meter away which he put wide. Another chance went begging as
our new youngster, Carl, found himself in acres as space in the D. He seemed to
wet his pants a lil as he proceeded to dribble towards the goal instead of
shooting and eventually gave a weak push towards the keeper (utilising Vis’s
skill, or lack thereof, from earlier in the game). Somerset West then grabbed a
third goal with time running out for Mutual. Only after the third goal did Vis
finally pull a goal back for us with a simple finish. This goal proved to be
bitter sweet as Somerset West put the final nail in the coffin after scoring
their fourth goal via a shortcorner. (Tosser - the holes in the Mutual defense has now joined the Great Wall of China as the only other thing to be visible from space)
It
ended Somerset West 4 – 1 Mutual
Mutual leaving the field bitterly
disappointed after playing some good hockey yet again but with no points to
prove it. Finishing is clearly a huge issue and an emphasis must be placed on
the winning of shortcorners as 3 of our 5 goals this season have come from
them. A special mention for man of the match Boogs, as he dominated at the back
with some solid tackling and defensive work.
