Winter League Game Week #4 - vs UCT (Mens 3s)

Good morning guys

The thorough bred 3s are still unbeaten! Things to focus on:
1.       Tackling was a bit horrendous.
2.       That clean sheet is still eluding us.

12 May 2012
Venue: UCT
Opponents: UCT

We rocked up at the game knowing that nothing short of a victory would ensure us going top of the table. Guys were in high spirits before we were informed that Sparky didn’t actually have the kit. Then we hit panic stations, after a couple of phone calls we managed to get Milky to drop the kit off at UCT. (Thanks Milky you are a life saver)

Not only that, but after our warm up the ball bag had been left in the car so there were no balls to warm up with and no keeper to warm up. This showed when UCT won the toss and chose to take the ball (Our first defeat of the season during the toss 3 for 4)

UCT center off and throw an overhead straight away. The attacker picked the ball up chest height right infront of our defender (not 5 from an overhead) runs into the circle and scores. Mutual 3s breaking the record for the fastest goal conceded EVER. Mutual 0 – 1 UCT.

Basil has 10 seconds on his watch and that was when we were centring off again. In those 10 seconds I had been told to shut up by the umpire (Lets call him ToolBox – TB from now on) and just play the game. After informing him that I am in fact the captain and I am allowed to query a decision. TB asked if I would like to be sent off, to which I replied ‘No, of course not’. Apparently that was the end of the conversation because he walked away.

No after one of the worst starts in Mutual history, we pulled up our socks and carried on the game pushing for our first goal. About 10 minutes in after dominating for quite a while, PJ ran the ball from a long corner smashing it across to ‘The Ginger’ – Simon Blake who stopped the ball and before he could get a shot off, young Spud came in with a reverse stick shot and sent the ball home. It almost looked as if they planned it. Mutual 1 – 1 UCT.

Most of the half consisted of TB making a shit call and then I would query it. And yes for all of you that were there, that was restraint! Again TB got involved and gave away a shorty just before half time. Our short corner defensive team which has been quite amazing lately and also keeps changing from shorty to short had no idea where they were running. UCT attempted a dragflick which was stopped by Sherman and cleared away quickly by Tosser with a well-timed waist high clearance.

We continued to push and UCT somehow were awarded a short corner on the stroke of half time. I can’t remember what it was for, but I probably complained to TB about it. Again out short defence team tried to keep out the ball, but to no avail. UCT had surrounded out goal box like the last scene of 300. Sherman pulled off a save with the first shot but couldn’t stop the follow up. Mutual 1 – 2 UCT.

Going into half time trailing. We were in a position we were not used to…Behind.lol.
We spoke about what needed to be done and the boys understood. We needed to win.

We took the field for the second half of the game and you could see the urgency from the boys. Mutual pressed and were awarded their first short corner of the first half. Unfortunately Tosser put it a touch wide….Again…..#ToldHim….Again. The second short corner deciding were were never going to score from a straight drag was slipped to Caveman was pushed straight into the keeper….twice. BUT our third shorty, also going to Caveman, which he also pushed straight at the keeper which was logging was given a flip over the keeper by PJ. Making it PJs third goal this season from a meter out.  Mutual 2 – 2 UCT.

UCT on the counter with Sparky chasing back, I know what you are thinking – why is Sparky in defence? – I still have no idea. He caught up to the winger and had no gas left in the tank, he then proceeded to clothes line/rugby tackle/power slam this guy on the edge of the 25. Completely unnecessary, but fun to watch. He was shown green and UCT received a short corner.

From then on the match was a lot like a tennis match. Both teams pushing for the winner, back and forth. Our Ginger coming off the bench and receiving a pass to p-spot which was clinically finished  putting Mutual back into the lead. Mutual 3 – 2 UCT.

With the game being 7 minutes away from finishing we thought we would grind out another famous victory. With UCT pushing us we thought we had this game in the back until Demon (he did make 2 saves before this, this was his third stop just before the goal line) except after stopping it, he lifted his stick into the air to clear it and just waited there until the UCT striker swung at it and scores. Mutual 3 – 3 UCT.

With the scores level we went balls to the wall trying to get the win. The next move, which must have been the best team move I have ever seen in hockey saw Mick slap the ball to Tosser, then went to Demon on the right and up the line until we forced a long corner with the help of Winders and Benji (Team-Africa) From the long corner the ball found 6-packs stick and with a faint touch nudged the ball into Winders path who then found Scooter. In the end Scooter got the ball to Blake who 1-timed it into the goals to nutty the UCT keeper who was just in awe and could not handle the awesomeness that had just happened in front of him. Mutual 4 – 3 UCT.

After taking the lead we sewed up our defence and did a bit of time wasting until the end. Near the end of the whistle Tosser threw an overhead to relieve pressure and somehow Benji got sent for chirping with a green card. Who cares….We won!

Final Score Mutual 4 – 3 UCT

Next Game:
Saturday 19th May @ Hartleyvale
Time: 15h00
Opponents: Pinelands

It wasn’t the bonus points we were looking for, but a win is a win. A little tougher than we thought but still a useless, a useless, a useless team. Let's keep it going boys!

Yours in awesomeness
Tosser
