Winter League Game Week #4 - vs Conberg B (Ladies 3s)

Date: 19 May
Venue: Mutual
Time: 19:30
Opponent: Conberg B

After reaching the top of the table, the Ladies 3's were looking to keep the momentum going by beating their next opponents. Having drawn to Conberg A, we were only going to be satisfied with a win against the weaker of the two Conberg teams.

Saturday turned out to be quite cold and miserable at stages due to the weather, but spirits were high for a win. An SOS was put out for a keeper as Tiny was away and the Ladies 4's would be way more competitive having their keeper in goal. Along came one Spur to save us in goal. Spur was probably thinking "conceding only 3 goals in 5 games...I shouldn't have to do too much work" and the pre-match team talk went along those lines.

The game started and after a bit of messy play, we hit out groove and some decent passing helped work the ball into the Conberg D. Scrat was on hand to slot it passed the keeper for a training game sort of finish in the opening 10 minutes. Mutual 1 - 0 Conberg.

With the play in the balance after the goal, it was evident who Conberg's best player was....and from the bench, word spread that she was registered with another club #awkward.
But we weren't bothered at the fact they needed outside players to try strengthen their team. Our back line was doing a fantastic job by closing down the non-Conberg player as soon as she was on the ball. Between Teacher, Muncher, Pot and BJ, Conberg were starved up front while Spur got wet in the rain.

Goal two came after some great play into the middle and back out again. Super-sub Slacker was in the perfect spot for a finish at the far post. Mutual was on a roll. Mutual 2 - 0 Conberg.

Time was called at some stage during the half and Pikkie walked over to have a word with the Umpire. Apparently the one Conberg player was of the opinion that we should take it easy on her girls as they were only in high school. Captain Pikkie had the perfect response by saying "this is called club hockey for a reason". It also turned out that the Conberg A team had mentioned to the Conberg B team that the Ladies 3's were "mean" #cry me a river!

The half time whistle went. Spur looked tired and wet, but was still keen to try and make some sort of save at some stage. We needed to press for a few more goals and hopefully get the bonus point.

The second half started and it was pretty clear what the Conberg team talk was about....They came out wielding axe's (well, they may as well). Stick's were being used in all sorts of was not intended. These Ladies were tackling worse that some of the Men's 6 players #tell them. This was frustrating for our Ladies because they managed to break down play at every stage with a terrible tackle and then proceeded to stand in front of the hit.

After a very crappy 20 minutes, Slacker was on hand again in the D to finish off what can only be called a medieval axe swinging contest. The ball popped out to the left post were she displayed great composure in battle and pop the ball past the keeper. Mutual 3 - 0 Conberg.

There were 15 minutes remaining and we really wanted to go for the bonus point. Conberg finally received some cream soda after 7 too many "not being 5 yards" from a free hit. But we still could not get the fourth goal. Muncher made some amazing runs down each side of the field by scribbling a hand full of players. With 5 minutes left, I was contemplating pulling Spur off and putting on another striker. I even shouted her name but I think she ignored me, well I like to think she didn't hear...I decided that the clean sheet for Spur and the half's was more important than letting in a silly goal with no keeper by possibly being a tad greedy.
Final Score: Mutual 3 - 0 Conberg

Talking points:
 - the Ladies Club Captain will mostly likely let WPHU know about the non-Conberg player
 - when teams frustrate us with dirty tactics, we need to keep our heads and play even harder
 - short corners need to more effective, not enough are being scored

Well done to Spur for a clean sheet! The half's had a great game and it was awesome to see Pot pushing up on the left hand side to make herself available for a pass. With that win we keep our awesome record and a step closer to finishing the 1st half the season in a great position. Next week is a crunch game against Pinelands. This one is really important.
