Winter League Game Week #4 - vs Milnerton B (Ladies 3s)

Date: 12 May
Venue: Milnerton
Time: 15:00
Opponent: Milnerton B

So another match day was upon us and we looked forward to taking on the other Milnerton side, having already beaten the Milnerton A team. Based on the previous result against Milnerton A and the other teams having beaten Milnerton B, the Ladies 3's were definitely favourites for this one.
I attempted to get Milnerton to move the game onto the Mutual astro instead of playing on the Milnerton cabbage patch (being the cool guy I am, and possibly being Match Sec helps with knowing which astro slots are available), but Milnerton rejected the request....and we were about to figure out why.

The Ladies arrived in drips and drabs, but we were still there quite some time before the Milnerton team. They literally walked out from the bar when the whistle went for the toss I think....
We noticed at once all the different 'stlyes' of players they had. The one young lady was dubbed 'MJ' from the word go but the Mutual Ladies as she resembled at youthful and non-white Michael Jackson. There was also Kobus Wise in their team...short sides, some frosted tips on the top. I still think she would be more comfortable in the front row for the Bulls.

Team Tosser was on hand to umpire and make sure the goal difference did not get too out of hand I supposed, but he didn't have to worry.

The whistle went for the start and with that domination/frustration of Mutual began. Camping, squatting, lounging, chilling, call it what you like, this is how the vast majority of the game was played in the Milnerton half.(Tosser - He means in the Milnerton 25) The grass was proving to be a pain for the forwards!!!! We had plenty of shots and circle entries, but we cold not convert any of the chances. To the credit of the Milnerton keeper, she was by far the best player in the team and she was having an unbelievable game. MJ go so bored, we could see her busting out a couple dance moves. We also spotted to weak link in the Milnerton team. They had a lady playing up front which had just learnt what a hockey stick was, but seemed to be wondering around the field aimlessly as if she was shopping for some shoes, unaware of the onslaught happening on the other side of the field. Scrat and a monster gab at the Milnerton right half and she ended up doing what looked like a swan dive into the turf face first. (Tosser - Breaking your fall with your face is something i have only seen members of Jackass able to do. So well done i suppose) "Ooooooh" was the choice of reaction from everyone when the lady hit the ground and it looked as though her spine had been compressed from the momentum of her body when she fell. Muncher made a awesome run from the half way and scribbled past 4 Milnerton players (it would have been more difficult for her if they were beacons) to reach the D and off load to Slacker, but again we could not convert the chance.

The half ended with the frustration building more and more. Even the umpires had a go at each other at one stage, Tosser - elaborate please? (Tosser - Of course i will. When a blow from the other umpire was queried, i politely jogged over there to have a quick chat/pep talk with her. She started going on about how we were a team and that we should stick by each other and.....ok well i stopped listening. I tactfully moonwalked my way out of there. Basically she wasn't going to listen to me and continue to blow anytime she heard a stick. A lot like Shooter's game that i umpired over the weekend. I must get the rule book for ladies hockey and read up on it)

The half time chat was to the effect of leave the umpires, keep plugging away at the goals and stop calling 'MJ' out loud on the field because by now she had caught onto what the Ladies had been calling her...

The second half got under way and we kept pressing and flooded the half with all of our players. Mid-way into the half, Milnerton's keeper gave way with a Mutual fantastic goal.
The build up had been the same for most of the Mutual attacks by working well off the ball and the passing going to Mutual sticks. Pikkie received the ball on top D and move towards her left to set up a back stick shot. The shot wasn't as aggressive and powerful as expected but the height was perfect for PG to get a crucial touch on the ball and send it into the back of the net before the keeper could react and get into position. Milnerton 0 - 1 Mutual.

With PG's goal came a huge pressure release for the team. We wanted that goal so bad and when it came, you could sense the relief.
Mutual kept pressing but the rest of the game went much the same way as the 1st half. Shots being saved, the Milnerton CH trying to smash river balls, MJ busting out some tunes...

Final Score: Milnerton B 0 - 1 Mutual

Talking points:
 - try not to get annoyed with fellow players if things are going according to plan
 - keeping up the pressure will always lead to the other teams defence to crack

This was one of the most frustrating games of hockey I have ever witnessed, but credit must go to the Ladies for keeping it together and getting the single goal we deserved to get the win. The forwards and the links worked really hard to force the goal and great positioning ensured the touch needed was done to good effect. With that, the half's did well to step into any Milnerton players receiving the ball close to the half and make some dominating tackles. Another win and that put Mutual Ladies 3's top of the L5 log!!!

We wish Jambo well on her journey to curry town and hope to see her back in the squad in time to hopefully finish off a great season. (Tosser - We hope she doesn't get dribble bum)
